Santa Fe Cyclists Give Back to the Community in a Big Way in 2023

4.92 tons of food will go directly to our Northern New Mexico neighbors who need it most.

Cranksgiving is a nationwide phenomenon taking place in more than 100 cities each fall. Originally an underground race between NYC bicycle messengers 24 years ago, the movement continues to grow and find purchase in the imaginations of grassroots organizers across the country and around the world.

Santa Fe’s Cranksgiving has been held every November since for the past 15 years, with the exception of a year off due to Covid. Over the last decade and a half the silliness encompassed by this ‘race that is not a race’ has grown from a modest checklist of grocery items and a list of stores into a three ring circus with bonus challenges, secret items and obstacles posed by local bike shops. Riders tend to return year after year and some of those participants have themselves turned into organizers… Doing good is infectious!

125 Riders. 9,846 lbs of food. 171 Turkeys, Chickens and Hams.

Thanks to our volunteers and business supporters

We want to specifically single out the following planners and volunteers for their contributions this year: Michael Gibson, Blake Hendsch, Riley Holmes, Phil Lucero, Gilbert Quintana, Benny Rose, Bill Roth, Dan Vance. And of course Kayla Bostic, Amanda Bregel, and the returning volunteers from The Food Depot who help us every year with weighing in all this food. Also BIG THANKS to Dominique, Preston and several others at BTI for jumping into the fray at the last moment when circumstances got a little wild.

…onward to this year’s winners!

Fastest Small Team: The Leftovers (minus 1:20h)

This 3-person team represented Santa Fe Area Homebuilder’s Assn with an adjusted time in the negative … well done!

Most Generous: BayWa Renewable Energy

This 5-rider group brought back more than $600 worth of groceries in one morning!

Fastest Rider: Britt Edquist (minus 1:40:15)

Our fastest individual rider with an adjusted negative time due to bonuses …And a weigh in of 83.6lbs! Winner winner chicken dinner, 2nd year in a row!

This 6-person group came outta nowhere this year to cinch the title of fastest large team. The secret to their success? Lots of community support! Ultimately they gathered 31 turkeys(!) through donations that were made on their behalf and collected during the ride.

Best Dressed: Gary Bass (Clown)

First rule of Cranksgiving, make sure your attire is as (im)practical as possible! The Ship of Fools turned out in costumed force as per usual, but Gary’s clown shoes really put it over the top for our judges.

Youngest Rider: Fiona Piccarello (2:09:27h)

We like to start ’em young at Cranksgiving. From her dad: “She was super proud to win the white jersey for best young rider 😉 it was a fun event and great opportunity to teach her about helping others.”

'Lantern Rouge': Ilsa Jule (2:54h)

We like to recognize the person who spent the longest time out on the course! Good work Ilsa!

One again, BIG thanks to our 2023 Sponsors
